Wesley Church is a place to grow in worship and holy conversation about the love of God, redemption through Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. We are intentional about sharing love and compassion with everyone. We serve in our neighborhood with a deep desire to strengthen our common community life. We have active ministries for children both on Sunday and through our weekday preschool program. Our youth are involved in Bible study, mission, fellowship and Scouting. Both United Methodist Men and United Methodist Women serve the ministry and mission in the Virginia United Methodist Conference. Together, the people of Wesley church seek to bring the love of Christ to life in worship, Word, and neighborhood.
It has been said that two hundred years ago Francis Asbury, the first Bishop of American Methodism, visited the Mount Vernon area and expressed a desire to see a Methodist Church built here. However, it was not until the summer of 1953 the need for a church in the Mt. Zephyr area was recognized by Mrs. Waddell, Mrs. Koogle, and Mrs. Rossie. These three ladies lived in the area with their families and realized that there was no local church or Sunday school their families could attend.
Always with the innate desire to establish a family community, with necessary facilities for religious instructions, they solicited the help of their husbands and gradually interested others in the community. After discussion amongst themselves, Mrs. Rossie and Mrs. Waddell then called on Dr. T. B. Landis, the minister of the Washington Street
Methodist Church in Alexandria. Dr. Landis acquired the help of the Reverend Mr. George C. Henley, the associate minister of the Washington Street Church who became the first pastor at Wesley UMC.
Since then, Wesley has sought to be a church home for families in this community. Our preschool offers an enriched program for social, academic and spiritual learning. Both Boy Scouts and Girls Scoutsmeet in our fellowship hall. We offer confirmation for middle and high school youth. Our youth participate summer camp mission. Wesley is
active in mission and ministry on the Route One corridor serving Rising Hope Mission Church, ROC Kitchen and Meals on Wheels. Globally, we serve Art for Humanity in Honduras, UMCOR and Virginia Conference missions.
